How important is “core” strength Training?

By Helen Vanderburg, Nautilus Institute™ Master Trainer

The importance of strengthening the core body cannot be ignored as it links all movement. A strong core body will support our back and prevent back injuries as well as give us greater force generation in all activities.

Use of Core/Back Strengthening

  • The core body can be defined as the torso from the neck to the pelvis
  • A well designed core strength training program should include exercises that train the front, side and back or the core
  • Traditional fitness activities and Pilates based exercise are excellent ways to strengthen the core
  • Core strength exercises can be done as a separate workout or as part of your resistance training workout

Benefits of Core/Back Strengthening

  • Core strength prevents back injuries
  • A strong core can make activities easier to perform
  • Core strengthening improves posture which in turn will give you the appearance of being leaner
